Shelter, or housing, is a basic need for all people. Many members of the military choose to live off-base in housing owned by private landlords. This may include renting a bedroom within a house, leasing an apartment, or renting a single-family house. Many service members also rent their houses when they are transferred from an area. Security Deposit

The security deposit is any money, including pet deposit or last month’s rent, taken in advanced of when it is due. The security deposit protects the landlord against damages caused by the tenant, guests or invitees, or from non-payment and/or damages incurred by the landlord if the tenant breaches the lease. The total amount of the security deposit cannot exceed the equivalent of 2 month’s rent. Additionally, the landlord must give the tenant a written receipt for payment of a security deposit.
